CNC Machinist
CNC machinist is the one trade on this list with no licensing anywhere — not state, not city, nothing that any state requires to run a machine for pay. What does exist is NIMS certification, and it's worth having, but it's voluntary: no law requires it, and no government agency issues or checks it. The whole credential game here is run by employers, not regulators — a shop cares what you can machine to tolerance, not what paper you're carrying. If someone tries to sell you a "state CNC license," that's the tell that they don't know the trade.

Do I need a license to be a CNC machinist?
No — and this is the cleanest "no" on the entire site. Not one of the fifty states licenses CNC machinists, and none of the cities researched for this data do either. NIMS credentials are the closest thing to a standard, and they carry real weight with employers, but they're voluntary industry certifications, not government licenses — nobody's checking a database before you're allowed to run the machine. If a training program or a "certification service" tells you a state license is required, that's a sales pitch, not a fact.
