Ironworker

Ironworking isn't licensed by any state — it's a registered-apprenticeship trade, and your DOL certificate travels nationwide on its own. What actually governs your work is the welding standard: structural steel welding runs on AWS D1.1 certification, which comes from employers and building codes rather than from a licensing board. The exception to keep in mind is local rather than state — New York City requires its own Department of Buildings certification for structural welding inside city limits.

Across all states: ironworker is not a state-licensed occupation in any US state. It is a registered-apprenticeship trade appearing in state apprenticeship directories rather than licensing rosters. The governing credential is completion of a U.S. Dept. of Labor-registered apprenticeship, typically 3-4 years, most commonly sponsored by the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers. That DOL certificate is federally registered and portable nationwide. Important adjacent requirement: structural ironwork very often involves welding, and welding on structural steel is governed by AWS D1.1 certification, which is employer- and code-driven rather than state-issued - see this dataset's welder records. New York City specifically requires NYC Dept. of Buildings certification for structural welding within city limits, which is the kind of local requirement ironworkers should check. OSHA fall-protection training is a near-universal employer requirement given the height exposure.

Where can I take my ironworker license?

Pick the state you're licensed in. You'll get the states that will consider that license — which is not the same as a free transfer.

FAQ

Is my welding certification enough to work as an ironworker anywhere?

Mostly yes, with one city-sized asterisk. No state licenses ironworkers, so there's no license to transfer, and AWS D1.1 certification is recognized nationally because it's a code standard rather than a state credential. New York City is the notable exception, requiring DOB certification for structural welding within the five boroughs regardless of what you hold elsewhere. Beyond that, expect employers to want OSHA 10 or 30 before you set foot on site — not because a law requires it in most places, but because general contractors and project owners increasingly do.

One entry per state, in alphabetical order. Each one covers who licenses the trade there, what it takes to qualify, and whether that state accepts a license earned somewhere else.

What the colors mean
  • Reciprocity — accepts some out-of-state licenses
  • No reciprocity — licensed here, but no out-of-state license is accepted
  • Nothing to reciprocate — no state license exists here
  • Not established — we could not verify this state's position — treat it as an open question, not a no
  • secondarydrawn from consistent secondary sources, not confirmed on the agency's own page

Alabama

No license — state or local

No license exists for this trade at any level — state or local — in this state.

Issuing agency: No state licensing agency for ironworkers. Alabama regulates this trade through apprenticeship registration rather than occupational licensing - the relevant state office is Alabama's apprenticeship agency (labor department or workforce development division), which registers programs rather than licensing individuals.

No state license. Registered apprenticeship, typically 3-4 years of on-the-job training plus classroom instruction. AWS D1.1 welding certification is the practical credential for structural welding scope, and is portable nationwide. OSHA 10/30 training near-universally required by employers.

Alabama does not license ironworkers - no US state does. This is a registered-apprenticeship trade, and the credential that travels is your U.S. Dept. Of Labor apprenticeship completion certificate, which is federally registered and valid nationwide. There's no reciprocity question here because there'S no state license to transfer. Note that structural welding scope is governed by AWS D1.1 certification, and some cities (notably New York City) require local structural welding certification.

What applies instead: Because Alabama issues no ironworker license, there is no state credential to reciprocate. The DOL-registered apprenticeship certificate is portable nationwide by design - it is a federal registration, not a state one.

Mississippi does not license ironworkers - no US state does. This is a registered-apprenticeship trade, and the credential that travels is your U.S. Dept. Note that structural welding scope is governed by AWS D1.1 certification, and some cities (notably New York City) require local structural welding certification.

What applies instead: Because Mississippi issues no ironworker license, there is no state credential to reciprocate. The DOL-registered apprenticeship certificate is portable nationwide by design - it is a federal registration, not a state one.

Issuing agency: No state licensing agency for ironworkers. Wisconsin regulates this trade through apprenticeship registration rather than occupational licensing - the relevant state office is Wisconsin's apprenticeship agency (labor department or workforce development division), which registers programs rather than licensing individuals.

No state license. Registered apprenticeship, typically 3-4 years of on-the-job training plus classroom instruction. AWS D1.1 welding certification is the practical credential for structural welding scope, and is portable nationwide. OSHA 10/30 training near-universally required by employers.

No state license to reciprocateSecondary sources — not independently confirmed by the agency

Wisconsin does not license ironworkers - no US state does.

What applies instead: Because Wisconsin issues no ironworker license, there is no state credential to reciprocate. The DOL-registered apprenticeship certificate is portable nationwide by design - it is a federal registration, not a state one.
